From 16 September to 16 October 2020, Zanardi Fonderie and the University of Padua, with the support of other European partners, will organize the online course ‘LightWeight Professional’, promoted by EIT RawMaterials and aimed at managers, engineers, and technicians of the mechanical industry.
Zanardi Fonderie and the University of Padua have actively participated, as promoters and sponsors, in the definition of the topics covered by the ‘LightWeight Professional’ course that would have been held in May 2020 at the Zanardi Fonderie headquarters and that, due to the Covid-19 emergency, has been reorganized into a 100% online formula.
The free online course entitled ‘Advanced Cast Iron’ will be available from 16 September to 16 October. The course – organized and certified by the Fraunhofer research institute within the European project ‘LightRight’ financed by EIT RawMaterials – offers online lessons, and the e-learning format includes material and videos for autonomous learning, online tutorials, self-assessment tests and questionnaires. The actual exam preparation will take place online for three consecutive days (specific for each module), which will be followed directly by the exam.
The lessons, taught in English, are aimed at managers, engineers, and technicians who want to promote the ‘light’ philosophy in their own strategic market, be it automotive or industrial, agricultural or earthworks, energy or railway. It will be taught by university professors and industry experts and organized by the Fraunhofer research institute. The conformity assessment system was organized in accordance with EN ISO 17024.
How the ‘Advanced Cast Iron’ module was born
The experience gained during the ADI DAYS 2016 workshop – organized by Zanardi Fonderie to promote the potential of austempered ductile iron (ADI) to international players in the sector – was fundamental in offering EIT RawMaterials important topics and material for companies that invest in innovation and efficiency.
Although the need to lighten components is known, the design and management rules for materials are not always followed. Hence, the need to organize a professional training course aimed at the professionals employed in technical and production offices, engineers and general managers.
The introductory module (i.e. the basic level of the Lightweight Professional Training Course) was held in 2019 in four countries: Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Germany. In 2020, another introductory module is scheduled in Berlin, Germany, from 12 to 14 May. Other modules, on several materials (such as composites, aluminium, powdered metals, magnesium, and steel), have been and will be offered again in the future to give participants the opportunity to obtain the advanced certificate of ‘Lightweight Professional’.
Aim of the course
The aim of the course is to offer a complete overview of the various types of advanced cast iron (according to international standards), from spheroidal graphite iron to austempered spheroidal graphite iron. The module has been designed and structured to introduce participants to the various foundry processes, studying in detail all the mechanical characteristics, properties, and advantages of these innovative materials, increasingly demanded in the design of light mechanical components with reduced environmental impact.
