In the earthmoving and mining sector, in particular, GJS (spheroidal graphite iron), ADI (austempered ductile iron) and IDI (isothermal ductile iron) represent an advantageous alternative to traditional materials used in the sector such as tempered steels. In fact, their properties guarantee comparable performance while allowing the components to be made lighter, avoiding surface cracks and offering considerably greater freedom of design and production, compared to the forging and welding process.
With Zanardi Fonderie, you can benefit from the advantages of ADI, IDI and GJS by relying on a single point of contact. Thanks to our flexible production plant, advanced supply chain processes that integrate systems such as ERP – SAP S/4HANA, a long-standing internal technical area, and our ability to respond promptly to customer requests, Zanardi Fonderie is the perfect partner for those who want to combine quality and a focus on making lighter components and on reducing total cost.
A long history, in the name of continuity
Founded in 1931, Zanardi Fonderie is a family business in its fourth generation. Since the 1980s, the company has been known for its research and innovation, choosing to specialise in the production of ADI and austempering.
The entire production process takes place in the Minerbe – Verona production plant in Italy, allowing the company to centralise and integrate all the phases necessary to produce mechanically machined castings. More than 200 employees work in the plant.
Zanardi Fonderie is IATF 16949 certified, the international standard that specifies the requirements of a quality management system for automotive production, which can rely on the performance of our castings in spheroidal graphite iron (GJS), austempered ductile iron (ADI) and isothermal ductile iron (IDI), in particular for “on-road” vehicles, such as buses and trucks.
Austempered Ductile Iron, ADI
Austempered ductile iron is a material that offers mechanical durability and resistance to fatigue, toughness, wear resistance, lightness, good machinability and a wide freedom of design. With austempered ductile iron (ADI), components can be made with mechanical properties comparable to those of tempered steels, but which are lighter and cheaper to produce. Due to its mechanical characteristics and machinability, it is particularly suited to the automotive sector as an alternative to cast, welded and forged steel.
At Zanardi Fonderie we specialise in tailor-made ADI castings, based on the customer’s design needs and requirements. In fact, austempered ductile iron can be produced in various grades (according to international standards), in order to be able to respond to each application request. Based on the desired thickness of the cast and grade of austempered ductile iron, the right quantity of alloying elements is defined, as well as the times and temperatures of the heat treatment. This flexibility in process management allows us to achieve the desired result across the entire geometry of the piece.
Austempered Ductile Iron, GJS
Zanardi Fonderie’s spheroidal graphite iron castings have always been recognised in the market as outstanding and are widely used to produce components in the automotive sector. What distinguishes GJS are its mechanical strength and ductility. Thanks also to the spheroidal shaped graphite nodules, spheroidal graphite iron, GJS, not only boasts superior mechanical properties with respect to grey cast iron, but also performs better and is more ductile. Unlike the flake-like structure of grey cast iron, the GJS spheroids inhibit the spread of cracks, thus making it possible to obtain parts that are more resistant and better performing over time.
Thanks to the casting technology and the excellent castability of the material, spheroidal graphite iron is also a valid alternative to the use of steel, because it allows the weight of the components to be reduced and the number of processes needed to obtain complex shapes to be lowered, with substantial savings in costs and material.
Isothermal Ductile Iron, IDI
In terms of efficiency and cost savings, isothermal ductile iron (IDI) is highly suited to the production of components for which high and uniform mechanical and fatigue properties are required as the thickness varies, such as the joint spindles on suspension systems. The structure of the isothermal ductile iron (IDI) matrix consists mainly of ferrite and perlite, elements that, thanks to a different distribution compared to traditional spheroidal graphite irons, increase the mechanical performance of the castings.
Among the advantages of IDI are: lightness (with an average saving in overall weight of 10% compared to steel); cost savings, since it is obtained by heat treating a ferritic spheroidal graphite iron (GJS400-15); excellent resilience and fatigue properties as the thickness varies; the ability to create complex shapes using material only where necessary.
In short, IDI is also a valid alternative to ferritic spheroidal graphite irons reinforced in solid solution (also known as high silicon cast iron) both technically and economically, for producing components that require exceeding technical and production limits, with scrupulous attention to costs.
Isothermal ductile iron (IDI): a material patented by Zanardi Fonderie S.p.a.
ADI, IDI and GJS: a better alternative to steel for the automotive industry.
ADI, IDI and GJS have properties and characteristics that make them preferable to steel, both in terms of performance and in making the mechanical components lighter, as well as reducing the total cost. Some of the main benefits are:
Lightness
Complex shapes
Resistance to fatigue
Wear resistance
Machinability
- Lightness: ADI, IDI and GJS have a specific weight which is 10% lower than steel.
- Complex shapes: spheroidal graphite irons (ADI, IDI and GJS) guarantee excellent castability of the material, providing the casting designers with more freedom compared to the forging and welding option, and ensure material is only placed where it is needed, with an important benefit in terms of costs and mechanical machining.
- Resistance to fatigue: the life cycle of a cast iron component is comparable to but not superior to steel.
- Wear resistance: this is a natural feature of austempered ductile iron (ADI), which is obtained without the need for any additional surface treatments and which increases the life of the part, thus reducing the number of replacements throughout the entire service life of the machine.
- Machinability: through Zanardi Fonderie’s advanced production process, the customer is guaranteed components with homogeneous hardnesses and optimised geometries, thus minimising the necessary machining and variations in hardness, all to ensure maximum cost containment.
Application examples
ADI suspension arm for trucks and special vehicles
ADI attachment frame for earth-moving machines
ADI axle pin for modular vehicles, self-propelled vehicles and trailers
Development of an ADI axle pin, previously forged in steel, for modular vehicles, trailers, heavy loads, special self-propelled vehicles for industrial applications.
In this project, austempered ductile iron (ADI) was preferred to forged steel, obtaining a lighter, stronger and better performing component.
An integrated process and state-of-the-art Supply Chain Management: Zanardi Fonderie as a single point of contact.
At Zanardi Fonderie we have created a highly integrated process that allows us to handle every phase needed to produce a cast iron component: design, casting, heat treatment, deburring, mechanical machining, control, certification and delivery.
We place ourselves on the market as a single point of contact able to support customers through 360 degrees. In order to better coordinate the entire production chain, we have developed an advanced Supply Chain Management system to guarantee the correct maintenance and fulfilment of orders and that makes use of systems such as SAP and CRM. This represents a huge advantage for the customer, who can count on a consolidated structure for the complete coordination of projects, thereby optimising production times and costs.
Many years of experience and investments in the search for innovative solutions have led Zanardi Fonderie to build a solid integrated process, which allows customers to be offered castings in ADI, IDI and GJS, mechanically machined and ready for use.
A flexible production system and a technical approach that is always by the customer’s side.
In the automotive sector, the ability of a foundry to respond to the customer’s production and design needs is of central importance. The Zanardi Fonderie smelting plant manages orders promptly, processing castings in ADI, IDI and GJS from a few Kg to 120 Kg and with batches from hundreds to thousands of pieces.
In addition, our technical area offers a co-design service for a totally customised industrial design. Starting in the quotation phase, the product requirements given in the drawing are analysed: from standards to tolerances and much more, to then proceed with the development of a tailor-made design, together with the customer, with a focus always on performance and on reducing total cost.
Quality and certifications
