The paper entitled “Fatigue strength of austempered ductile iron-to-steel dissimilar arc-welded joints, Issue 4, pp. 667-689”, the result of a collaboration between the University of Padua and Zanardi Fonderie, won the award assigned by the International Institute of Welding for the best paper of the year, namely the “Welding in the World Best Paper Award” for 2021, in the” WitW Award Cat C – Structural Integrity, Design and Fitness for Service”.

The award – published by the authors and researchers Giovanni Meneghetti, Alberto Campagnolo, Daniele Berto, Elena Pullin and Stefano Masaggia – will be presented at the opening ceremony of the IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference to be held on Sunday 17 July 2022 in Tokyo.

The content of the article is the result of a major collaboration between Zanardi Fonderie and the University of Padua. They combined their expertise to demonstrate that by acting on specific parameters, the welding process can be fine-tuned to obtain dissimilar arc-welded joints in “austempered ductile iron-to-steel” without compromising the mechanical features of the final welded component and achieving better mechanical performance to meet the requirements of the final component.

The specimens for the research were prepared by the “Italian Institute of Welding”. The results of the research led to the publication of an analysis of the microstructure in the joint area after welding, the results of the fatigue tests and, lastly, the comparison of the fatigue behaviour of dissimilar joints with the best known and standardised welded steel joints.
